SORANO, SOVANA, PITIGLIANO
Pitigliano
Pitigliano is a small municipality in the province of Grosseto, a characteristic example of a medieval village, located about 300 m above sea level on tuffaceous rocks, dominating the valley floor full of caves and vegetation. Of Etruscan origin, its history is rich in curiosities, as suggested by the nickname "Little Jerusalem" that accompanies the small village which, since the 16th century, has been home to a Jewish community in exile from the then Papal State.
Its historic center hides many places of historical and cultural interest, especially the "ghetto", the heart of the Jewish community, with its Synagogue and Jewish cemetery, the unleavened bread oven, the ritual bath and the kosher butcher's shop. But it will also be very interesting to discover Palazzo Orsini, the wine cellars and the mysterious Vie Cave, a dense network of narrow streets and caves dug out of the tuffaceous rock by the Etruscans.
SOVANA
Less than 10km from Pitigliano you can discover the charming medieval village of Sovana, absolutely worth visiting, which, although small, contains many treasures of the past such as the remains of the Rocca Aldobrandesca, the Museum of S. Mamiliano, the Sovana Cathedral (an important example of a Romanesque-Gothic building), Palazzo Pretorio with the Loggia del Capitano, the Etruscan Necropolis of Sovana and the Vie Cave of Sovana.
SORANO
This village of Etruscan origin is characterized by its typical architecture which has hollowed out and shaped the tuff to create houses, alleyways and narrow streets whose origins are lost in the centuries. A dominion of the Aldobrandeschi family and later of the city of Siena, Sorano has a long history that saw it play a leading role in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Like nearby Pitigliano, it welcomed a Jewish community, which characterized its customs and town planning.
